Nutcracker debut turns into eulogy for slain 6-year-old girl

Today was supposed to be a special day for Makayla Sitton. The wide-eyed, 6-year-old girl was going to perform in The Nutcracker at the Eissey Campus Theatre at Palm Beach Community College's Palm Beach Gardens campus.

She couldn't wait.

"Makayla loved ballet," said Colleen Smith, artistic director of the Florida Classical Ballet Theatre. "She was so thrilled because this was the first time she was able to participate in The Nutcracker."

In split second, joyous holiday turns tragic

— It was 10 p.m. when the monster emerged. Jim Sitton was facing the refrigerator, packing up Thanksgiving leftovers with two of his wife's twin cousins, Lisa and Carla. Then Lisa collapsed — just slid down in a big plop. Her purse hit the floor, and Sitton heard a pow, and he thought: she had a gun, it hit the tile, it went off.

In face of senseless tragedy, love is the only response

Don't try to explain. Resist the temptation to reason or debate. Stop looking for answers, because there are none. We Christians tend to want to theologize tragedy. Our human need to satisfy our intellectual curiosity too often gets in the way of our response. It took me 45 years of living to finally realize that God doesn't have to tell us everything, a reality for which we should all be thankful.

Makayla leaves a legacy of faith

It’s human nature to search for a glimmer of faith in the face of death. In the case of 6-year-old Makayla Sitton, her family didn’t have to search far. Before she was shot to death in her bed on Thanksgiving night, Makayla was a fixture at her Palm City church. Everyone at Calvary Chapel Palm City knew the little girl with the thick dark hair and voracious appetite for reading.

Kicking depression: Finding faith in your worst nightmare

Something horrible happened here on Thanksgiving night. I heard about it when I walked into the newsroom on Friday morning. As the day wore on every snippet of new information was more horrific – leaving the crew of veteran reporters and editors in our newsroom shaking their heads.
